Taking your first "lumps"? You could take "Edging & Bracing" on Friday, Saturday morning head to the beach for "Fear to Fun in the Surf". Grab some lunch then head back out Saturday afternoon for "Mastering Boat Control". Then wrap up your weekend by heading back out to the surf for some more practice with "Fun & Feedback"!
PLEASE, may we have some more? So you are back for more eh? Once you have been to Lumpy it's hard to stay away. On Friday get back out there and review some surf zone skills by starting off with "Fun & Feedback". Saturday step up your seamanship with the full day version of "Navigation Strategies for Sea Journeys". The sea is not such a mysterious place if you know what to look for. On Sunday wrap up your weekend with an "Introduction to Rock Garden Safety & Rescue".
So you want to LEAD others on the sea? To start with I highly recommend that you look into participating in BCU week just prior to Lumpy Waters. Description: This class is held on the sheltered waters within Nestucca Bay and provides the student with a repertoire of useful strokes and boat maneuvers for different boat designs. The key cause and effect relationships involved in boat control are introduced and students learn to perform maueuvers safely and efficiently.
FEAR TO FUN IN THE SURF

Prerequisites: Basic skills and a COMFORTABLE wet-exit
Venue: Surf Zone
Description: The surf zone can be an intimidating place at times. See this exciting environment through new eyes as you gain confidence and understanding of the dynamics at work in the surf. Learn to select a safe play zone, read water, and operate in the surf. This class emphasizes how to safely negotiate a surf break zone during launching and landing without getting surfed. Become skilled at holding position and moving within the surf zone with boat control and safety as the number one priority. This class is a great choice for people looking to try the surf for a first time or have not yet had formal instruction in the surf.
SHORT BOAT SURFING

Description: Students will learn proper techniques for safely operating in the surf zone with whitewater and surf specific kayaks. Description: Having mastered the recognition of hazards, holding position, and self rescuing in the Fear 2 Fun class, move onto this next step before venturing out beyond the break. You will work on activities that create opportunities for Practicing teamwork, signaling, launching, landing, broaching, maneuvering and surfing in the soup zone with lots of feedback and tips to help you along. If you had fun during Fear 2 Fun but want more time to practice this one’s for you. Have fun, gain some confidence, and become comfortable in the surf! Students should have completed Fear 2 Fun and be able to self rescue. A roll is handy, but is NOT required.
LONG BOAT SURFING

Prerequisites: A consistent roll plus completion of the "Fear to Fun" program. Students should already be able to hold position, enter and exit the surf zone while maintaining boat control.

Description: Once comfortable with basic surf zone operation it's time to surf! This class emphasizes how to select a break, position your self to catch waves, and enjoy the ride. This class is an introduction to surfing waves in a sea kayak. We will be practicing the use of surf etiquette, spacing, and group management while playing in the surf. Learn to prevent and control broaching, side surfing, and even back surfing.
OPEN WATER RESCUES

Prerequisites: Basic paddling skills and deep water assisted re-entry experience
Venue: Deep calm water
Description: This half-day class is held on sheltered water and introduces deep-water rescue techniques for solo and group paddlers. The class covers techniques for solo re-entry of a kayak following a wet exit as well as assisted drain and re-enter rescues involving two or more paddlers. It also covers basic safety concerns and safety related features of sea kayaks and paddling equipment. This class is fun for anyone.
ROLLING CHECK-UP
Focus: Playing
Skill Level: Novice or Intermediate
Prerequisites: Consistent panic-free wet-exits and underwater comfort. Students should have already had some successful roll training.
Venue: Flat water
Description: Rolling can be a mysterious skill. If you have been working on your roll and would like some helpful tips on making it stronger in calm water, this class is for you. This is a group rolling class for people that have already had some one on one training and know the basics of the roll but would like to improve more before moving the skill to a combat situation. We aim to provide a 4:1 student to instructor ratio for this class.
FORWARD STROKE CLINIC

Description: The forward stroke is arguably the least perfected skill in kayaking. Who needs this class? Have you ever felt like you are working really hard to keep up with the group? Are you really tired and sore after paddling when others do not seem to be? Do you aspire to kayak race or paddle for fitness? Do you have a long journey planned? You can go fast or go slow with an efficient forward stroke, but there is no reason to work harder than you have to. Master this critical skill!
INCIDENT MANAGMENT

Skill Level: Intermediate or Advanced Intermediate
Prerequisites: Solid flat water rescue skills and rough water paddling comfort. Students should be able to perform a myriad of rescues including solo re-entries and various towing techniques that already work well in flat water.
Venue: Open Coast including rocks, surf, and tidal currents
Description: Take your rescues from the flat water and test them in the dynamic environment found at sea! We will discover things we can do to facilitate fast, simple, and effective rescue when the environment is less than forgiving. Beyond rescues we will also explore other incidents that may simply require a tow to the unlikely situation of needing to call for outside help. We will also be discussing risk assessment and the principles of good leadership to prevent incidents.
EDGING & BRACING
Focus: Playing
Skill Level: Novice & Intermediate
Prerequisites: Basic Skills and comfortable wet-exits

Description: Explore this stunning coastline’s labyrinth of arches, tunnels, and overfalls while learning to control and maneuver your sea kayak in this complex environment. We will practice skills that increase our safety margin within the rocks. Rock specific rescue techniques and methods will be practiced in real conditions. This class is fun for people who already have some ocean paddling experience and can confidently perform regular deep water rescues quickly and effectively.
SUSTENANCE FISHING FOR KAYAKERS: CRABBING

Description: Learn how to catch tasty Dungeness crab from your sea kayak with compact handlines in a protected environment with limited power boat traffic. Cook them up on the beach at the end of the day. A skill any saltwater paddler should have!

Prerequisites: A reliable roll in flat water. Students should be comfortable self rescuing in mild conditions.

Description: The roll can be an elusive beast. What works in the pool when you are expecting to flip does not always transfer to rougher waters. Turn your quiet domesticated pool roll into the powerful and reliable combat roll you really need. Students will be practicing bracing and rolling skills where they are needed most. The swirling current, swell, and surf at the Nestucca River Mouth will provide a dynamic but safe environment to practice this rough water skill.
NAVIGATION STRATEGIES FOR SEA JOURNEYS

Prerequisites: Some basic chart reading knowledge required. Students should be able to paddle comfortably out at sea at the intermediate level in moderate conditions.

Description: This course is designed for those paddlers carrying out coastal journeys. The aim is to give the student tools to enable them to plan trips and navigate while on the water. Traveling on the sea can be an amazingly rewarding experience, but to do so safely everyone should have on water navigation training. This course will be incorporating dry land and paddling activities to keep students challenged and entertained. See how FUN navigation can really be. Demystify the black art!
RIDE THE TIDE & MASTER BOAT CONTROL

A solid roll is not required, but some rolling experience is helpful.

Venue: From flat water to a dynamic river mouth with incoming tide
Description: Eddies, currents and waves. The Nestucca River drifts peacefully along the main event site just south of Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, then empties into the ocean resulting in the confluence of swift current, eddies, and waves. Enjoy the scenic flats along the river and challenge yourself down at the mouth of the Nestucca.

Description: Group paddling can be fun and VERY rewarding. Effectively and safely managing a group of friends or peers on the water takes practice. Learn some procedures and what to watch out for. Learn basic and advanced techniques for towing other people and boats using contact tows and tow lines. Master this essential skill for paddling with other people. This class is fun for anyone.
MASTERING BOAT CONTROL IN CONDITIONS

Skill Level: Intermediate
Prerequisites: Students should already have solid maneuvering skills in flat water. Be prepared to perform assisted re-entries and be able to paddle at sea for 3-4 hours in conditions.
Venue: Open Coastal
Description: The class will be held in open water with windy, choppy conditions. You will discover how to apply all of your flat water strokes and maneuvers in a dynamic environment. You will learn how to make use of a skeg or rudder to balance your direction in a cross or down-wind scenario. You will gain experience paddling in head, side and following seas in complete control. This class if fun for people who already know how to maneuver their boats in calm conditions and can already perform deep water assisted re-entries.

Prerequisites: Be able to paddle for a Full Day, Comfort with Moderate Water - Wind waves & wakes to 3ft, tidal currents to 4kts, wind to 20kts, Moderate to high boat traffic.
Venue: Tillamook Bay
Description: Learn how to fish for Dungeness crab, and jig for lingcod with handlines from a sea kayak in a moderately challenging environment with high power boat traffic. Participants should be ready to take crab home!
INTERMEDIATE SEA JOURNEY

Skill Level: Intermediate / Advanced Intermediate
Prerequisites: Students should be able to paddle comfortably out at sea at the intermediate level in moderate conditions. A roll is not required but is strongly recommended. Holding pace at 3 knots is essential. Comfort performing assisted re-entries while in conditions is also required.

Description: Get out and explore our beautiful coast line. This journey will launch through the surf and will head out to sea if conditions allow. Oregon's shore is made up of a series of flat welcoming beaches interspersed between huge outcroppings of volcanic rocks and cliffs that conceal complex caves and tunnels.

Description: Take your rock gardening to the next level! Explore the unforgiving bowels of the Oregon Coast by probing deep into some of the best sea caves in the area. Students should have good boat control and reliable rescue skills. A roll may come in handy too. This is one of the highest difficulty classes and would be a great choice for any experienced paddler looking to step up their game.

INCIDENT MANAGMENT
Focus: Journeying
Skill Level: Intermediate or Advanced Intermediate
Prerequisites: Solid flat water rescue skills and rough water paddling comfort. Students should be able to perform a myriad of rescues including solo re-entries and various towing techniques that already work well in flat water.
Venue: Open Coast including rocks, surf, and tidal currents
Description: Take your rescues from the flat water and test them in the dynamic environment found at sea! We will discover things we can do to facilitate fast, simple, and effective rescue when the environment is less than forgiving. Beyond rescues we will also explore other incidents that may simply require a tow to the extreme situation of needing to call for outside help. We will also be discussing risk assessment and the principles of good leadership to prevent incidents too.
COMBAT ROLLING & BRACING
Focus: Playing
Skill Level: Intermediate or Advanced Intermediate
Prerequisites: A reliable roll in flat water. Students should be comfortable self rescuing in mild conditions.
Venue: Dynamic Water
Description: The roll can be an elusive beast. What works in the pool when you are expecting to flip does not always transfer to rougher waters. Turn your quiet domesticated pool roll into the powerful and reliable combat roll you really need. Students will be practicing bracing and rolling skills where they are needed most. The swirling current, swell, and surf at the Nestucca River Mouth will provide a dynamic but safe environment to practice this rough water skill.
