LUMPY WATERS XII: 2021
The Lumpy Waters Sea Kayak Symposium
We regret to inform you that we have chosen to postpone Lumpy 2020. Dave, Suzi, and I have spent a lot of time trying to find safe solutions that would facilitate the event, but at the end of the day, we will not compromise anyone’s safety for the sake of a sense of normalcy.
Trust me when I say: WE WANT LUMPY! But the best thing we can do is focus on solutions for 2021.
We have considered many logistics to create a safe learning environment, but that safe environment goes beyond our coaches and students. It is our responsibility to protect both our paddling community and our regional communities. Our small, coastal towns have been uniquely challenged by the pandemic as people flock to these small communities for an escape – with insufficient regard to further impacts imposed on locals.
While we are bummed about missing all of you this year, we are grateful for your support and understanding. It is our goal to deliver the best event we can, and we hope to see you for Lumpy XII, October 8-10, 2021. Through the end of the year, we will be honoring 2020 pricing for the 2021 event. Come January, 2021, we will go back to deposits. So if you’d like to sign up for next year, 2021, click HERE! If you are already signed up for 2020, please let us know if you would like to move your booking forward.
And if you are local, Cape Kiwanda RV Resort (aka Lumpy HQ) is definitely open for your personal trips!
Stay safe, protect each other, and we hope to see you next year.

Team Alder Creek are the BEST!
Absolutely amazing experience. Great classes, world class instructors, and just a ton of fun. I will keep coming back as long as I am able. Anyone who wants to improves their skill and confidence on the water, plus stretch and be challenged, will make great gains at Lumpy. And you will make new friends as well. Thank you to all, including the generous sponsors. A special shout out to Sev. He is one of the best instructors I have ever had in any venue. He’s got the gift of being an innately talented teacher!
A fun event with amazing classes and wonderful people!
What a fantastic event! I not only learned a lot and had a lot of fun, I also learned how much FUN the surf zone can be! The instructors were extremely experienced, knowledgeable, patient, observant, helpful, and delightful. The event was well run and organized. The participants varied widely in their skill level, and everyone was supportive, encouraging, and celebratory of each other’s accomplishments at every level. I can’t wait for next year!
Learn to Roll and win a Dry Suit!!!!
My original goal this year was to successfully roll. From the class descriptions I thought that you already had to know how and just wanted to do ‘tune ups’. I talked with Andrew at Alder Creek and he said that I could sign up for all 3 classes that they offered – so I did. Thanks for the help Andrew.
Helen Wilson and her trusty assistant, Michael, taught the classes. They were really Great and patient with my ‘remedial’ needs. Helen was very clear in her instructions and had all of the steps for progression in her tool bag. Viola – in class three, you guessed it, I successfully rolled!!!!!
It turns out that Sunday I had another class with Helen and Michael. We did a lot of strange and fun things that helped with balance and understanding you and your kayak better. A Great class to end the weekend. Thanks so much to Helen and Michael!
Now for this last part. Everyone at Lumpy is Great. Alder Creek staff (Suzie,Dave, Andrew), the teaching staff, the cooks, the other participants, and the Sponsors. Speaking of Sponsors, I have to give a shout out to Kokatat! Why you ask – because I WON THE GRAND RAFFLE PRIZE! A new, top of the line, Kokatat dry suit!!!
What a weekend! I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks to everyone who was there!
Best Lumpy Experience!
Lumpy Waters was a blast for me! I finally got to take a class with the famous Helen Wilson on rolling. In all my subsequent classes I rolled as needed, which gave me the confidence and competence toward leaning those new skills. And then Short Boat Surfing with Bill V. was perfect for where I was. He gave me a specific correction at each stage of my personal development in this super fun skill. Great fun! I’m grateful to have this highly proficient slate of kayak professionals in our neighborhood each year. Thank you!
